Unemployability – Bigger problem than unemployment. Who is responsible for this?

unemployability_1

I am a degree holder from the reputed university. I have obtained 95% in total aggregate. Is it sufficient for the candidates who apply for a job to get the job for him? Is it sufficient for the personnel to become a successful professional or entrepreneur? Probably no! Why I am saying this is based on my interactions with graduates or post graduates who apply for a job position. I have been observing a consistent skills gap between students and industry need and big problem is it’s more related to attitude and behaviour of the students.

From the company’s presentation to written test and other rounds of the interview, sincerity, humbleness and patience is often observed missing in the students. Will not we call it a suicide attempt by the students who are themselves killing their career prospects? Why students have such casual approach towards their career while in studies? When they realize that that have missed opportunity due to such casual attitude, it become very late and situation does not seem like bus or train which someone can get another if one missed. Such students get astray in their career and blame education and authorities for their unemployment.

Is it right to blame education system for such state of students? My answer will be yes as well as no. First I would like to explain why it’s yes. Most of the universities and institution show big dreams to the students while offering admission in the study course. They show previous placement statics of the college and assure the students to get them place with reputed MNC. Students feel it granted placement and never try to focus on the skills required for them to get placed. Some colleges or universities though provide personality development classes to the students but impact of these classes is not that it should be and those classes are seen as formality only. In the mushrooming of the colleges/private universities, quantity of the numbers is being more focused than quality of the education. There are few colleges who have maintained quantity as well as quality but there are very few only.

In the last semester of the studies when students have to go for the industrial internship, there is lack of guidance for the students who have no experience to take right decision. In such situation a valuable suggestion from training and placement cell can be very beneficial for the career of the students. But who cares? There are very few officials of the placement cell who actually guide right to the students, rest misguide or mislead the students. Eventually whose loss is this? Of course students will suffer.

These were some of my points which were supporting my answer in yes. Now I will share why I feel that students too are responsible for such situations. In campus life, from lectures to seminars, practical work to assignments, students never focus on the studies and acquiring skills. Often students are heard saying they will start studying later and this later becomes a final late. Most of the students feel that only academic studies are sufficient for them to get a job but their belief gets disillusioned when face the market reality. Most of the students often take wrong decision when go for internship and take the internship period as campus life. In this case students are wrong in blaming in education system or government for their unemployment and are themselves responsible for this.

Once you complete your degree and come out of campus, nobody will entertain you unless you possess skills required to become employee of the company. So, It’s better to board the train before you miss it as there is no chance of retake.
