Gurunanak’s Sikhi – Dedicated to mankind and humanism.
Wahe guru ji da khalsa, wahe guru ji di fateh.
The sikh community is renowned worldwide for it’s bravery and the quality of remaining happy even in adverse times,often known as “Chardi kala”.They have three basic rules to abide by:
- Vand chakna – open community meals,known as “langar”,where people from every cast and creed,no matter how much he or she is earning,can sit among the other people and have the meals.
- Kirat karna – working hard and honestly without any self orientation.
- Naam japna – keeping Waheguru in mind in all situations and chanting, ‘Waheguru’.
But it is very sad to note that the children, especially the Sikh children are unaware of the glory of the rich Sikh culture. They don’t even know the reason behind the formation of this community by Guru Nanak Dev ji. Let alone this, only a few of them know that Guru Nanak was born a Hindu with Hindu parents. His rejection of his religion was not show any disrespect to any religion in particular, but to prove that there is only one God (Ik-Onkar). This rule of abiding to a single God is often misinterpreted by disrespecting other’s castes. Nanak created this Sikh community to help the other communities.
Shocked? Yes,Nanak established its foundation to create a community that would help the needy and poor and defend the pitiable. Provision of justice was also a principle that the disciples (Sikhs) had to follow. Nanak wanted all the violence and hatred due to castes and creeds to vanish. This was the reason why He created a separate community who will never indulge in any kind of idol worship, will never cut their hair(which indicates respect for their guru) and lead their lives on the sikhi of the Guru. But alas,these guidellines and the basis is almost getting lost generation after generation. Superiority complex has taken the place of generosity. Only a few sikhs now have the aspiration of becoming a baptised sikh(Khalsa). Only a few of us know that the khalsa sikh never gets indulged in any kind of addiction and is strictly a vegetarian.
Waheguru said that whoever follows the discipline of the guru and leads his or her life according to the holy Shri Guru Granth Sahib,is a Sikh,no matter whatever is his or her religion. If you have the aspiration in your heart to one day becoming a baptised Sikh, then you are a Sikh. The person who helps selflessly and follows the Sikhism, is a Sikh,because a Sikh is the disciple or student of the guru, and if one follows its discipline,then he is a Sikh.
- “Ik-onkar, Satnam, Kartapurakh, Nirbhau, Nirvair, Akal murat, Ajooni saibhang, Gurprasad, Jap,Aad Sach, Jugad Sach, Haivi Sach, Nanak hosi bhi Sach.
- Soche soch na howei, Je soche lakh waar; Chuppe chup na howei, Je laai har lakhtar; Ukkhiya pukh na uttari, Je banna puriya paar;
- Sahasyapana lakh wo hai, Ta ikk na challe naal; Keve sachiyaara hoiye, Keve koode tutte paal; Hukam rajai chalna, Nanak likheya naal”.
This is the ‘Mool Mantra (root magic chant) which describes people to adhere it with. It’s not necessary that who follows Sikh religion should follow the teachings of the Sikhism but all who feel the humanity is above all should follow the teaching of our Gurus. Compassion for all and harmony among society, these are the teachings of Sikhism and who follows this is a true Sikh irrespectively belonging to any religion.
