Project Semicolon; the journey isn’t over.

Punctuation can be powerful. A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life. Project Semicolon is a faith-based non-profit organization. This began in the spring of 2013, when Project Semicolon Founder, Amy Bleuel wanted to honor her father whom she lost to suicide.Through the semicolon symbol many related to the struggle of depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide and their will to continue on. The title, “Project Semicolon,” also represented a goal – to believe that this is not the end but a new beginning.

As the project was developed further, it became clear that this symbol was not just about one person. Originally created as a day where people were encouraged to draw a semicolon on their bodies and photograph it, it quickly grew into something greater and more permanent. Today, people all over the world are tattooing the mark as a reminder of their struggle, victory, and survival.

Over the years Project Semicolon has become much more than just one person honoring a parent. Through musician support and social media, the message of hope and love has reached a big audience in many different countries.

Project Semicolon does not offer a direct helpline, but instead brings those battling depression together through their inspirational messages, blogs, and other resources.

Project Semicolon is described as a “faith-based movement,” but Bleuel said it’s inclusive of people of all faiths and identities. The reactions she’s been getting have been overwhelmingly positive, from those within and outside the faith community.

Now, more and more people are opting to tattoo semicolons onto their skin as a symbol of hope.
At the end we should always remember that life is precious, live it to the fullest. Don’t forget there are people who love you and who will die a little everyday inside if you decide to end your sentence. Stay strong and keep writing your beautiful story of life.
