Jubilant & Apprehensive faces of Indian Job Market.
The human resource of various Indian corporate & industries witness some variances in Indian job market where two opposite faces have appeared for it, one very jubilant and another very anxious & apprehensive. So, let’s observe the which face is a big concern –
After formation of new government in center, Indian economy is predicted to be strong with rupee gaining it’s value in international market and investors seeing India a potential & profitable market. Various industries like IT, Telecom, Manufacture, Retail and Automobile are set to see a major boom in coming days. Besides this some home companies plan to expand operations. Foreign investors feel Indian market secure and stable hence planning to enter as Prime Minister’s “Make in India” slogan alluring giants towards Indian market. So, millions of jobs are expected to be generated in various fields. To fulfill the demand of skilled manpower, India needs to supply highly skilled manpower to achieve the desired results to the investors. Every year more than 3 million students become university graduates all over the country. This is all about a happy and jubilant face of Indian job market.
But another face, the apprehensive one seems to be more challenging than the jubilant one. According to a recent report from The Nation Association of Software & Service Companies (NASSCOM), only 10 % of Indian university pass out graduates are employable. There is a huge skills gap between students and company’s requirement. 90% students lack in technical skills, more than 75% lack in communications skills, soft skills and job skills. This is a big threat to the country’s economy as skilled employee force is the prerequisite for all industries and India’s incapability to avail this will make investors refrain to enter the market or draining overseas manpower to India. In such scenario our youth will not get meaningful employment despite availability of opportunities.
As I have been interacting with students of different institutions, universities in different regions of the country, I have tried to find the reason behind this skill gap. The biggest reason is lack of awareness, knowledge and tools. The schools and universities have been imparting the same education content from several years without any update in syllabus but during some intervals there is change in professional techniques, tools & skills required, hence students get no opportunity to get aware of this. Student’s lots of gets wasted in traditional academic methods, internal & external assessments and all sorts of things.
Another reason is student’s less eagerness & interest to be a learner. Most of students think that merely after completing the degree they will get a job, so not very keen to learn employable skills. There have been some efforts from various universities and institutions to set up skill development center with collaboration of industry, but such efforts have not been successful due to student’s casual approach. But whosoever’s fault is this, our young generation is apparently going to suffer a lot if this situation continues. So, all students are required to become job ready before it becomes very late and look for all sources to possess required skills and tools. It’s student’s responsibility to exploit and utilize the any opportunity to learn new skills and techniques. Merely academic degree will not help to get absorbed in the industry but extra efforts outside the curriculum will be required.
Hence, the apprehensive face is a big issue of anxiety and the entire face of Indian job market is needed to make jubilant.
