Industrial Training – Most crucial stage of your studies, take it seriously.
India, despite being a country with maximum universities and educational institutes where we see a higher education institute after an average distance of 30-40 kilometers, level of education and skills of the highly qualified students remain dropping consistently. When these institutes were in high rise in early 2000, educationalists and industry anticipated an improvement in the education and skills level of the learners. The rise in technical and engineering colleges also induced another business establishment like training centers, yes, the training centers where students get training to fulfill the degree completion requirement.
In most of the universities, the engineering and other technical course students undergo an internship period in which the students have to spend last semester of the degree in the industry and work on a relevant project work. On the completion of the project work and its submission to the institute, degree is formally considered completed. To cater to the students needs to develop projects, many training companies emerged which offered students some basis training and a dummy project as academic project to be submitted. Within years, these training centers became a huge hit and such training centers started opening like grocery stores near major institutional areas.
The students who do not have much knowledge about motives and purpose of industrial training due to more involvement in theoretical studies and exams often get deviate. The universities deliberately send students for the industrial training for the following purpose –
- To enable students to learn updated technology in demand.
- To acquire employability skills.
- To get a platform to understand corporate culture, hierarchy and business communication.
- To get absorbed in the industry.
The above purposes can be attained only if the students move and learn in the industry but majority of the students to have a cakewalk choose training institutes for the industrial training. Do the above purposes of the industrial training get meet if students choose a training institute for the project development? Definitely no, the students who submit a readymade dummy project which contains no efforts of the students enables them to get a degree but not the skills and capabilities required to get and conserve a job.
If you are studying only for a degree then it does not make any difference where you spend six months of the industrial training period but if you are very ambitious about your career, the six months industrial training period is the most crucial period where you get an opportunity to get transformed into a professional. If you miss the opportunity knocking at your doorstep, your future plans to become a successful professional may get spoil. To prevent this to happen, you need to be very careful and cautious while choosing a company where you are supposed to get 6 months training.
By the end of the second last semester of the degree, many companies from different industries start visiting colleges for the campus placement. Many students are offered jobs in these campus placement drives and the selected students join the company on the beginning of the last industrial training semester. Some of the students are given joining offer after the completion of the training period subject to the learning they attain in the training period. For the students who are offered joining after the industrial training or the students who are not able get any offer from any company, the industrial becomes more crucial as it becomes a last hope to get revive.
Choose a company carefully – Before choosing a company to get training, see the credentials of the company. There are many companies which are disguised as a genuine company but when truth unveils, it becomes too late. There is no harm to get training from a training company provided they train you with latest updated modules of the training and provide a live working environment. Try to get everything in documented especially on the letter head of the company. Do not get prey of the gimmicks.
Sponsor your training – Most of the students expect a stipend or salary during the training period which is not a wrong to expect. The creamy level students are offered a stipend during the training and the rest who are left often expect such offers. There is a thumb rule – no one bothers to train you without his own benefit in it. If you are not able to get an offer from any genuine company, make a budget to sponsor your training. If you want to become financially independent and recover the funds invested in your training, get a part time temporary job in retail, BPO or multi food chains, there are ample of such opportunities in all major cities.
Change your attitude and lifestyle – Student’s life is absolutely opposite to professional life. As a student; casualness, goof ups, missing deadlines, leniency and non-adherence to rules are accepted or partially accepted with a penalty. But for a professional, there is no mercy for those who commit these things at workplace. If you have same casual approach as you had during studies, you miss an opportunity to get transformed into a professional and once this opportunity is missed, there is no surety for you to get it. So better to understand demand of time and understand value of all learning in the training period.
