In today’s professional world, where thousands people complete their studies and reach a point to be part of any reputed company to kick start their career. But they find a gap between that point and the entry point of the organization. So one has to cover that gap with help & support of a valuable asset – Communication Skills. At the end of a degree, ambition of every young graduate is to get meaningful employment & to use the skills and techniques learnt in academics. But it is always observed that some of these job seekers get through easily but most of them struggle a lot to get first job. Reason behind this is poor communication skills. Most of students, during academics focus more on technical skills rather than communication skills and during academics, it’s best time to develop communication skills for a student where they have opportunity to interact with each other.
To develop communication skills, first step is to understand the process of communication in which a sender sends a message through verbal, written or non verbal medium to a receiver. Before sending the message, content is encoded by the sender which is decoded by the receiver when it is received. So, it’s necessary to encode a message properly so that the receiver could decode it and the sender could get appropriate feedback. Clarity in voice and sounds, attentiveness, consistency, adequacy, correct grammar & punctuation are some major factors which are required for successful communication.
There might be a question in every student’s or professional’s mind – Why there is need to develop good communication skills? So, here’s the answer – We express our opinion & expressions, we involve in oral interactions, conversations & discussions, we participate in meetings & conferences, we have to give presentations in professional career. To perform all these activities efficiently, we must have excellent communication skills with ability to effectively send the message to the receiver.
So, let’s find how our communication skills can be improved. First step is to be verbally articulate and learn phonetics transcription of the language. Next step is to focus on syllables, rate of speech, intonation & facial expression while communicating. Only thirty five percent of our communication is contributed by verbal and spoken form, rest is contributed by non verbal clues such as facial expressions, eye contact, body language, gestures and intonation. Keep on improving vocabulary by adding new words and knowing it’s usage. Use correct grammar with correct usage of tenses & modal. So, these are few steps to improve communication skills, however it is a never ending process in which we get opportunity to learn from various situations, so never miss any chance to learn.
