If you are a job seeker or thinking to switch your job, you have many things at stake with your CV. Your CV is projection of your credentials, background, skills you possess & your compatibility with the job you are applying for. Even the interview is scheduled after your CV is screened by the prospective employer. Sometimes, despite having various relevant skills in you, your CV is not able to project those or there are various silly mistakes in your CV which create an assumption that candidate might not be right for the job position. In this post, I share with you some mistakes made by not only fresher but experienced people also. Here these are –

Grammar & formatting – Grammar mistakes, spelling errors, unformatted text are some of the basic mistakes but dangerous enough to cost you your dream job. Devote some extra time, read and re-read your resumes before pressing the send button.

Length of CV – Your CV should not be too short that recruiter could not get any information from it and shouldn’t be too long that recruiter feels like reading an epic. 1-2 pages is what makes for an ideal resume, basis the span of work experience. While a long resume is exhausting for recruiters to scan through the relevant things, very short resume gives out nothing substantial to a recruiter to assess.

Too many skills – Mention the skills which are relevant to the job & employer. You can't be good at everything and anything related to your job profile and the recruiter knows that too. So, it is irrelevant and a waste of time to fill your resume bragging about all the skill sets required to do the specific job. It does more bad than good to your chances of getting an interview call.

Using short forms – ‘U’ as You, ‘R’ as are and other short forms are acceptable in casual communication but using it in professional CV reflects casualness. While the Whatsapp generation has a habit of using short forms, it doesn't look good in a resume. It is a professional document and should be treated like one. Short forms puts off recruiters and it makes it difficult for them scan through and comprehend the relevant information from the resume.

Incorrect contact information – This is the silliest thing which is done by various people. You might have changed your contact number or might have started using another email id, but if you have not updated these in your CV, update it immediately. Recruiter might be contacting you on wrong contact details. Also, use a professionally sound email id.

These things are very basic but most commonly mistaken by job seeker. Remember, an opportunity does not strike repeatedly. Once missed due to such silly mistake, it may become lifetime regret for those who might miss. Have a successful career!
